Dept. Round-up: Oct. 18, 2019

  • We have become obsessed with lady astronauts, and for good reason. The FIRST EVER all-woman spacewalk on the ISS is happening. It’s actually live as we write this round-up. Before you ask, yes, we are watching it as we write. What an inspirational moment for so many young people around the world.
  • Brittany Howard had a Tiny Desk Concert this week and it was outstanding! We can’t get enough of her unique songwriting and powerful voice. This concert does not disappoint.

  • If you don’t know who Hannah Gadsby is, this is a great introduction. She has made a name by critiquing the global issues caused by misogyny. As most powerful women these days, she is ready and pushing for a shift in traditional masculinity.

  • This week Sam gave a talk for our local NTEN chapter, 501techNYC. Sam presented alongside our friend Nette Compton from The Trust for Public Land. The two used the work we have been doing with TPL for the last several months as an example of how to better know your audience to create better online communities. If you missed the event don’t worry! There is a recording of the talk, and you follow along with these slides.
  • Podcast Recommendation of the week – Dolly Parton’s America: Howdy! This nine-episode dive in the Dollyverse looks to be an intriguing examination of America’s greatest icons. Dolly Parton. We can’t wait for this dive into why Dolly Parton is one of the few things everyone can still agree on. This podcast launched this week, and we are excited to follow along.
  • Weird animal of the week: We normally do a cute animal, but this weird cat had us laughing for a good thirty minutes. It certainly has some mixed feelings about its person.
  • Sometimes you just need to waste some time. Attempt this perfect circle challenge, share it with your friends. Good luck, it’s far more difficult than you’d expect.
